beYOU Helpline: 0118 959 7269

The beYOU Helpline is a confidential phone service which aims to provide a wide range of information covering topics as diverse as; ‘coming out’, sexual health, mental health, relationships, domestic abuse, and local information.

Where appropriate we can help people meet other lesbians and gay men, or organise face-to-face meetings at our Thursday night beHERE drop-in sessions.

The Helpline used to be our core service, and still is one of the major focuses of the organisation. However caller numbers have dropped, meaning that we only need offer the service one night a week.

This change in demand has allowed us to offer a wider range of services, such as the beHERE drop in, the web site, message board nights, whilst still using the same amount of volunteers. We hope to continue this broader approach to supporting local lesbians and gay men over the coming year.

Statistics 2001–2002

The total number of calls has dropped in recent years; this is due both to reduced demand, but also to the reduction of the service from three nights a week, down to one.

The Helpline users are predominantly gay men, seeking information, counselling and safer sex advice.

The majority of our callers are from the Reading and West Berkshire areas, though we have had calls from as far away as Germany!
